Why invoices suddenly arrive as XML

Structured e-invoicing is becoming mandatory in more and more European countries, each on its own dates. In several of them the obligation to receive comes before the obligation to issue, which is why a business that does not send e-invoices yet may already be receiving them.

  1. 1 January 2025

    Germany

Every domestic business must be able to receive an e-invoice in the EN 16931 format. Until the end of 2026 a supplier may still choose to send another kind of invoice instead; the issuing dates follow below.

  2. 1 January 2026

    Belgium

Mandatory B2B e-invoicing over Peppol, applied to all businesses at once rather than phased by size.

  3. 1 February 2026

    Poland

KSeF, the national e-invoicing system, became mandatory on this date for the largest businesses and for receiving invoices, and on 1 April 2026 for most other businesses; the smallest join on 1 January 2027. KSeF takes its own FA(3) structure, which this viewer does not read.

  4. 1 September 2026

    France

Every VAT-registered business must be able to receive electronic invoices, with no size exception. Issuing starts the same day for large and mid-sized companies and extends to small businesses on 1 September 2027.

  5. 1 January 2027

    Germany

A business whose own turnover is above €800,000 must issue XRechnung or another EN 16931-compliant format to its German business customers from this date; the obligation extends to all domestic B2B invoices from 1 January 2028.

Under the EU's ViDA package, adopted on 11 March 2025, digital reporting requirements for cross-border B2B supplies apply from 1 July 2030.

Dates checked against official sources on September 11, 2026.

Read like an invoice

Musterfirma GmbH

2024-0847 · € 1,190.00

Read it as an invoice, not as markup

Supplier and buyer, dates, references, line items, allowances and charges, the VAT breakdown per category, and the amount actually payable — laid out the way an invoice is laid out.

Check it against the rules

Every finding carries its published rule identifier, such as BR-CO-15 or BR-DE-15, so you can look it up rather than take our word for it. Totals are recalculated exactly, never with rounded arithmetic.

See every rule it checks

Take the data with you

Export the invoice header and its line items as CSV for bookkeeping, or keep the original file and hand it on unchanged.

How an e-invoice XML becomes a readable invoice

Drop the file in

An XML file or a ZUGFeRD or Factur-X PDF. You are not asked which syntax it is — UBL and CII are detected from the document, and the XML embedded in a PDF is extracted automatically.

Read the invoice

The document is mapped onto the EN 16931 semantic model, so a UBL invoice and a CII invoice are shown with the same fields under the same names.

Check and export

Findings are listed with rule identifiers and severities, and the parsed data can be exported as CSV.

E-invoice formats this viewer opens

One reader for the European standard and the two syntaxes it is expressed in.

  • XRechnung 3.x

    SyntaxUBL / CII

What it readsBoth syntaxes — UBL and CII — including the German BR-DE rules and the Leitweg-ID carried in the buyer reference.

  • ZUGFeRD 2.x and Factur-X

    SyntaxCII (PDF)

What it readsThe hybrid PDF format used in Germany and France. The embedded CII XML is extracted from the PDF and read; the PDF is not sent anywhere.

  • UBL 2.1 and Peppol BIS 3.0

    SyntaxUBL

What it readsInvoices and credit notes, including the Peppol business process and electronic address rules.

  • UN/CEFACT CII D16B

    SyntaxCII

What it readsThe Cross Industry Invoice syntax on its own, as delivered outside a PDF container.

Built for whoever was just handed a file they can't open. Small businesses and freelancers, accountants and bookkeepers, accounts payable teams, and developers comparing their own output against the standard — not a department already running an e-invoicing platform.

What this viewer cannot do

Stated plainly, because a tool that overstates itself is worse than no tool.

  • It does not create or send invoices

This is a reader and a checker. It does not issue an e-invoice and it is not connected to the Peppol network.

  • It checks a documented subset of the rules

The core EN 16931 presence, arithmetic and VAT-breakdown rules, plus the XRechnung and Peppol rules named in the report. A clean result here is not a formal conformance certificate; the European Commission's own validator is the authority.

  • Formats outside EN 16931 are not checked

Turkish UBL-TR, Peppol PINT and Saudi ZATCA invoices are shown, but neither their own rules nor the EN 16931 rules are checked against them. Italian FatturaPA and Brazilian NF-e files are not read at all.

  • It is not tax or legal advice

Whether a document satisfies your obligations in your country is a question for your accountant.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. It's read right here.

An invoice carries customer names, bank details and prices. E-Invoice Viewer parses the file in your browser; no copy of the document is sent to a server, and there is nothing for us to store, log or lose.

The parser and the validator run as ordinary page code in your browser.

The page is served with a content security policy that refuses every origin but our own, Cloudflare’s two analytics hostnames — one serves the measurement script, the other receives page-performance data — and youtube-nocookie.com, for the demo video’s YouTube player frame, though nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press play. None of them is sent your invoice. That reach is what the browser enforces. Your invoice is never sent at all because no code on this page sends it — that comes from our code, not from the policy.

That policy covers this page, and it stops at the edge of the player. Once you press play, the video runs in YouTube’s own frame; our policy does not govern what it loads from there, and we neither control nor count it. Nothing from your invoice is in any of it.

Once E-Invoice Viewer has loaded, it keeps working with no network connection at all.

No account and no sign-in are needed to read an invoice, and there is no cookie banner — the only cookie we set holds a language code and nothing else.

Questions about opening e-invoices

Six more questions and three worked examples, with the validation rule reference linked.

Read the questions page
What is an e-invoice XML file?
It is an invoice written for software rather than for a person, following the European standard EN 16931. The same invoice can be expressed in two syntaxes, UBL and CII, which is why two e-invoices can look completely different inside while meaning the same thing.
How do I open an XRechnung file?
Drop the XML onto this page. It is read in your browser and rendered as a normal invoice. You do not need to install anything and you do not need to know whether it is the UBL or the CII variant.
My invoice is a PDF. Is it an e-invoice?
It may be. A ZUGFeRD or Factur-X invoice is a PDF with the structured XML embedded inside it. Drop the PDF here and the embedded XML is extracted and read; if there is none, the file is an ordinary PDF.
Is my invoice uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read by code running in your browser and never sent to a server. The page’s content security policy lets the page itself reach only our own origin, Cloudflare’s two analytics hostnames and youtube-nocookie.com, for the demo video’s YouTube player frame, though nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press play. Cloudflare receives anonymous page-performance data; the player, once it is running, is YouTube’s own document, and what it loads from there is outside our policy and neither controlled nor counted by us. Your invoice is in none of it.
